Early production Charles Eames for Herman Miller Lounger and Ottoman 670 / 671

Absolutely outstanding early production black leather and rosewood Eames 670 /671 lounge chair and ottoman, designed by Charles and Ray Eames. 

The Eames' originally designed the set as a gift for their friend, the director, Billy Wilder ("Some Like It Hot", "Sunset Blvd.").   

We understand this set dates from 1955/6. It has the Eames label on both seat and ottoman. There is a stamp on the seat under the cushion numbered 509 (we have been told the early chairs where numbered as they came off the production line) as well as four number 5s stamped into the wood.

The patina of the rosewood is beautiful.  The wood is in good condition with some edge wear - tiny bumps and some small chips on the edges (not very noticeable).  

The leather is in good vintage condition - it has some slight scratches to be expected of a 60 year old chair, and the down filling is compacted somewhat - personally, we prefer this to the thick, overfilled matt modern version, as the leather looks supple and gorgeous and it's more comfortable.

The seat pad has has been reglued around the zip where it had become unstitched but this is all underneath the seat.

If you want a new-looking chair, this will not be for you, but if you want a chair with tons of character that epitomises cool - this is it!  Eames' vision in designing it was to evoke "a well-used baseball mitt" and he nailed it.

The metal base is in good vintage condition - some scratches and scuffs commensurate with age but nothing noticeable.

Overall the chair is in good vintage condition.
